About Esenler Solid Waste Facility
Developed in Esenler, this solid waste facility was designed to strengthen the district’s waste collection and processing capacity.
For waste facilities close to residential areas, minimising odour and noise is the priority. Enclosed reception and sorting areas are kept under negative pressure by controlled ventilation, and materials resistant to the corrosive environment determine the building's life.
Esenler Solid Waste Facility is one of the reference projects in Sönmez Mühendislik's industrial and commercial buildings portfolio. Since 1995, Sönmez Mühendislik has provided structural, electrical, mechanical and infrastructure engineering with BIM coordination for projects in Türkiye and abroad.
Approach
Engineering for solid waste facilities
Solid waste centres are industrial infrastructure facilities with heavy plant, long-span halls and corrosive environments, requiring odour and leachate control.
- Long-span steel or reinforced concrete halls
- Odour control and industrial ventilation
- Leachate, drainage and infrastructure systems
- Equipment power, lighting and fire protection
Engineering
Key engineering topics for this type of project
In waste facilities the building must last under heavy traffic, chemical exposure and continuous operation. Material selection, ventilation and drainage design are therefore decisive.
- 01
Durable structure
Concrete class, cover and coatings are selected for heavy vehicle loads and a corrosive environment.
- 02
Odour and air control
Controlled exhaust and, where needed, odour treatment are planned for reception and sorting areas.
- 03
Leachate and drainage
Water from the waste is collected separately and sent for treatment, kept apart from site drainage.
- 04
Fire risk
Early detection and suitable suppression systems are designed for waste storage areas.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How is odour controlled in solid waste facilities?
Enclosed areas are kept under negative pressure and exhaust air is treated, for example by biofilters, before discharge.
Why do these facilities need special drainage?
Leachate from waste is polluting; it must be collected separately from rainwater and treated.
How is fire risk reduced in waste facilities?
Early detection, thermal cameras and suppression systems of suitable capacity are used in storage areas.
