About Sabha Stadium (Libya)
Built in Sabha, Libya, this 20,000-seat stadium makes a major contribution to the region’s sports infrastructure.
In a 20,000-seat stadium, the stand structure is designed for the dynamic loads created by crowd movement. Libya's hot, dry climate drives the cooling loads, while grid conditions directly affect generator and backup power capacity.
Sabha Stadium (Libya) is one of the reference projects in Sönmez Mühendislik's industrial and commercial buildings portfolio. Since 1995, Sönmez Mühendislik has provided structural, electrical, mechanical and infrastructure engineering with BIM coordination for projects in Türkiye and abroad.
Approach
Engineering for sports and social facilities
Long-span structures, crowded areas hosting thousands of people at once and high energy demand require the structure, lighting and safety systems of sports facilities to be designed together.
- Reinforced concrete and steel structure
- Pitch and stand lighting, power distribution and low-voltage systems
- HVAC and plumbing for changing, social and technical areas
- BIM-based interdisciplinary coordination
Engineering
Key engineering topics for this type of project
Stadiums require specialist engineering for cantilevered stands, long-span roofs and circulation areas serving thousands of spectators. Dynamic crowd loads dominate the structure, while pitch lighting and broadcast infrastructure lead the electrical design.
- 01
Stands and cantilevers
The stand structure is designed for dynamic loads and vibration caused by crowd movement.
- 02
Long-span roof
Roof systems are configured for long spans together with wind and snow loads.
- 03
Pitch lighting and broadcast
Broadcast-standard lighting, scoreboards and broadcast equipment receive redundant power.
- 04
Crowd safety
Emergency lighting, wayfinding, public address and fire systems are sized for safe evacuation.
Projects abroad: Engineering for projects abroad takes into account the country's codes in force, climate, local material and equipment supply and the grid infrastructure. High temperatures directly affect cooling loads, and grid reliability directly affects generator and backup power capacity.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What makes stadium structures special?
Cantilevered stands and long-span roofs must resist dynamic crowd loads, wind and, in some climates, snow.
How is pitch lighting designed?
To meet broadcast and competition standards for illuminance, uniformity and glare, with redundant power.
How do overseas projects differ?
Local codes, climate, material supply and grid reliability are taken into account, especially for cooling and backup power.
